The Medical Sales Representative is a key link between pharmaceutical companies and healthcare professionals. He/she is responsible for contacting potential customers such as primary care centres, hospitals and pharmacies, identifying their needs, convincing them that the products (medicines or medical devices) of his/her company can best satisfy their needs; closing the sale according to the terms and conditions; and providing an after-sales service.

Brief Job Description

The Medical Sales Representative is a key link between pharmaceutical companies and healthcare professionals. He/she is responsible for contacting potential customers such as primary care centres, hospitals and pharmacies, identifying their needs, convincing them that the products (medicines or medical devices) of his/her company can best satisfy their needs; closing the sale according to the terms and conditions; and providing an after-sales service.

While there are no specific educational requirements to become a pharmaceutical sales representative, most of these professionals hold a four-year bachelor’s degree. Many have science backgrounds, which help them to understand new products and to communicate effectively with health care professionals. Aspiring reps should therefore take some coursework in biology, chemistry and statistics.

Business training is also desirable to sharpen sales and negotiation skills. You will need to show:

  • excellent communication skills;
  • an outgoing and persuasive manner and the ability to deal with people who hold differing beliefs or values;
  • confidence and persistence;
  • patience and self-motivation;
  • analytical and planning skills;
  • a flexible approach to work in order to adapt to changes, for example in the healthcare system or product and drug formularies;
  • strong teamwork and networking skills;
  • commercial and business awareness.
